My Teaching Philosophy
My dream
An original poem by Emily V. Tuckett
To make a difference in the world,
has always been my dream.
But changing this enormous place
is harder than it seems.
So I became a teacher
so I could shape young minds
and when they dare to change the world
a solution they can find.
And with that little child
and the difference that they make
I can now know truly
I helped the world to change
Career
Emily Tuckett's career can be defined in one word: Tenacity.
When Emily first began teaching, she wasn't very good. Though she worked the hardest she had ever had in her entire life, she still lost her position. But she didn't give up. In a career defining moment, she went back to school, and got an early childhood endorsement. She then worked her way up through different school jobs to gain as much experience as possible, using each open door as a study in classroom management. She's been a HS SPED tutor, Title 1 specialist, Classroom aide, Crossing Guard, and even a Lunch Lady. Finally, after 18 months, she was given a chance at a classroom again. Kindergarten Full Day--oh joy! But she still wasn't good enough, and wasn't reemployed.
Emily moved to Laughlin/Bullhead area and had a successful year teaching full day Kindergarten there. She experienced true cohesive teamwork and data driven instruction and the oven-like heat that comes with the High Desert. Come the end of the year, Emily was offered her position at Diamondback Elementary again! Sadly, her husband had been unable to find work, and she desperately missed her family. The choice was made to return to Utah.
Athenian eAcademy in Nephi is a mixed grade school very much like "Little House on the Prairie" but with Internet. Teaching 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades simultaneously, Emily thrived! She became head teacher at her tiny campus, and EYE (Entry Year Enhancement) Coordinator for her entire charter. In those five happy years, Emily taught students who didn't fit in traditional schools, had been bullied, were grades behind or ahead in different subjects, and even students who had never been successful in school EVER.
Tragically, danger lurked in the grass. COVID happened. The CFO of the company was discovered to be laundering money from the charter. Teacher salaries were slashed and AeA moved to hourly teachers. Emily lost her job.
Tenacity. Resilience. Emily didn't quit! She got a placement at Sunset View Elementary in Provo. Go Dragons! Teaching in a Post COVID setting was challenging, and unforgettable but enrollment numbers in Provo City School District dropped and 30 teachers were let go from the district. Emily was the last teacher in, and had to be the first teacher out.
Remember that tenacity? That "Bulldog who sinks his teeth in" kind of spirit Emily had? She began taking science classes and working toward her dream job teaching SCIENCE! Classes started, and Emily began applying for jobs. One hundred applications later, Emily was hired at Walden School of Liberal Arts in the Provo Riverwoods teaching 7-8th grade science.
Emily flourished in the classroom and taught in a very hands on way. Her students panned for gold to learn about density. They made chocolate rocks to understand the rock cycle. Bungee Barbie, rocket cars, edible cell diagrams! What a romp! And the students? They learned and they loved it.
In her second year at Walden, just days before Christmas vacation, Emily made a mistake. She gave up on a student. This teacher, known for her tenacity, her grit, her ability to reach hard to reach students... asked a group of boys to calm their behavior down for just a few more days. Then they would be done with her class and Christmas break would be done. One boy felt betrayed.
The next day, she touched one of those boys on the shoulder and asked him to stop messing with the projector. He went to his Parents. They went to the Principal. She got fired two weeks before Christmas.
Could it sound any more like the beginning sequence of a Hallmark movie?
Tenacity: She got a job subbing with EDUStaff and Tutoring Online with Tutored by Teachers in February. She's been there ever since. Tuckett Teaching was born!
